Meeting Jesus Ministry Opportunities
We meet you, O Christ, in many a guise;
your image we see in simple and wise.You live in a palace, exist in a shack;
we see you, the gardener, a tree on your back.
The United Methodist Hymnal, #257

Disciples of Jesus go out to serve the world, first of all, because it is in serving that we meet our Lord. It is not, primarily, that we “have” something to give to the world, but that we grow in the knowledge and love of God when we engage the hurts and the needs of the world beyond our walls. Outreaching service – giving ourselves away – brings new life to congregations as we meet Jesus in the living of our faith.
The Burnt Hills United Methodist Church has received the incredible gift of resources to empower the congregation in outreaching service. In addition to already-existing resources of people, talents, and funding sources, in 2013 the congregation received the gift of a bequest from Ruth Manley, a former member and church secretary. Following the Biblical model, leaders of the congregation voted to TITHE this amazing gift – 10% of the gift is designated for ministry beyond the local church.
Those tithed funds from Mrs. Manley’s estate have been designated under the heading “Meeting Jesus Ministry Outreach Fund.” The fund will be available for start-up grant requests from persons or groups in the congregation who hear a call to engage BHUMC Christians in ministry projects where we meet Jesus. The fund would also be intended to empower new leaders who are called to reach out in new ways of serving.
Examples might include:
- Leading youth in a summer mission trip
- Beginning an ongoing ministry of presence or service to our neighbors through SICM or other urban or interfaith agencies
- Offering, and inviting the larger community to, support groups (grief support, parenting, chronic illness management, etc.)
The funding process will involve: An application, developed by the Pastors in consultation with the Outreach Commission and the Lay Leader.
Review of applications and discernment of funding awards will be done by a Meeting Jesus in Ministry discernment team made up of: one representative each from Discipleship, Outreach, and Education Commissions; The Lay Leader; The Pastors.
